Obituary
Mr. George Benson Barton, Sr., age 70, of Calhoun, passed away peacefully Friday morning, December 1, 2017.
He was born in Rome, Georgia, September 21, 1947, son of the late Robert Dudley Barton, Jr. and Margaret Hutcheson Barton. Benson was a graduate of Adairsville High School and attended Andrew College and Reinhardt College. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in the Vietnam Era and received the Vietnam Good Conduct Medal. He was a member at Calhoun First United Methodist Church. Later in life he was the glue that kept the family together, from weekly dinners to annual reunion. Benson genuinely loved people, whether it be with an off color joke or a warm hug he never failed to bring a laugh and brighten your day. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, George Benson Barton, Jr.; brothers, Robert Dudley Barton, III and Cannon Barton; sister, Sidney Barton Trimble and sister-in-law, Nancy Upshaw.
Survivors include his loving wife of forty-seven years , Anne Upshaw Barton of Calhoun; sons and daughters-in-law, Matt and Lynne Barton of Calhoun and Joe and Kate Barton of Tulsa, OK; granddaughters, Kathryn and Leslie Barton of Calhoun; brother, Louis and Jolene Barton of Rome; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Creech of Greenville, SC, Ovelle Barton of Adairsville, and Anne Barton of Canton; brother-in-law John and Patsy Trimble of Adairsville; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 2:30 PM at Calhoun First United Methodist Church with Father Philip Scott, Min. Ed Archer, and Rev. Wesley Hunt officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Happy Hollow, Adairsville. Pallbearers include his nephews Dudley Barton, Bart Barton, Luke Barton, John Creech, John Fortin, Greg Johnson, John Pollard, Scott Cordes, Tim Morrissey, and Warren Scoville.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Barton Funeral Home.
