Billy Joe Combs

Billy Joe “Bill” Combs, age 74, of Adairsville, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at AdventHealth Gordon in Calhoun, following a courageous battle with various health issues.

Bill was born on March 26, 1952, in Hazard, Kentucky, to the late Mary Magdalene Gayheart Combs “Mag” and William Kanis Combs “Red”. He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Jordan; brothers, Jeff Combs and Nonny Combs; sister-in-law, Norma Combs; and several aunts, uncles, grandparents, and extended family members.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ivanett Combs; daughter, Amber Carter and son-in-law, Chris Carter; brothers, Bobby Combs (Nata), Rick Combs (Eileen), Greg Combs (Angela), and Mike Combs; stepdaughters, Jenna Shumate and Renee Hight; grandchildren, Brittany Horton, Hannah Horton, Nathan Horton, Robert Horton, Nolan Hardin; great grandchildren, Marley Horton and Zayley Cohely. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and extended family members who will forever cherish his memory.

Bill was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, Papaw, nephew and friend. Some of his favorite memories were found in the simplest moments - gathering around the table for a meal, sharing stories, laughing together, listening to music, or simply sitting with the people he loved and enjoying good conversation. Family was at the heart of Bill’s life, and those ordinary moments became some of the most treasured memories he leaves behind.

Bill also had a special place in his heart for his dogs, Sassie, Cookie, and Charlie. He especially enjoyed sharing his Nilla Wafers with Charlie each morning and giving Sassie belly rubs whenever he could. His love for his dogs was just another reflection of the caring nature that those closest to him knew so well.

Bill was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work and in providing for his family. His career as an owner-operator of Combs Brothers Trucking, Inc., eventually took him to Fernandina Beach, Florida, where he spent more than a decade of his life. He later returned to the Cartersville, Georgia, area and continued working as a diesel mechanic before retiring from United Rentals.

Outside of work, Bill enjoyed the things that brought him a sense of relaxation and happiness. He loved watching drag racing and baseball, spending warm summer days on his front porch, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the outdoors. He had a strong interest in Harley-Davidson motorcycles, enjoyed collecting firearms and took pleasure in target practicing.

Bill was also someone who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He found genuine joy in helping others, especially those who were less fortunate. His generosity, humor, kindness, and willingness to be there for others left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Bill’s greatest legacy, however, will always be the love he gave to his family and the memories he created with them. Though he is no longer with us, his love, laughter, kindness, and the countless memories created will live on through his family and friends. His life was a gift to those who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home with Rev. William Watkins officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Barton Funeral Home.

A luncheon will follow the service beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Snow Springs Baptist Church located at 61 Snow Springs Church Road NW, Adairsville, Georgia 30103.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Bill’s honor to assist with the purchase of his mother’s grave marker. This was something that the family had been working toward before Bill’s passing, and it would mean a great deal to Bill and his family to see this special tribute fulfilled.

Donations may be made at https://www.supportnow.org/mag-s-gravemarker.
