Mr. Dennis Wilfred Hand, Jr., loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of Fairmount passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Dennis was born in Columbus, Georgia, May 29, 1941, son of the late Dennis Wilfred Hand and Helen Elizabeth Barrentine Hand. Dennis was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Shellnutt Hand.
Dennis was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1964 until 1970 reaching the rank of Captain. He served in the Vietnam War from June 1966 until June 1967 with the 71st Assault Helicopter Company, as a combat helicopter pilot, call sign Rattler One Three, and received a Bronze Star. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech earning his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree. Dennis worked as an electrical engineer for Georgia Power for 34 years before retiring as the General Manager of power distribution. Those who knew Dennis would call him a master tinkerer or as he called himself a maintenance engineer. You would often hear him say, "If it ever worked, I can make it work again." He was an avid fisherman, golfer and an advanced Ham Radio operator, call sign WK4ICR. Dennis will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. To know him was to love him.
He is survived by his son, Dennis "Dee" Hand, III and wife Susan; daughter, Helen Adcock and husband Barry; grandchildren, Matthew Hand, Jason Hand, and Nathan Adcock and wife Gloria; great-grandchildren, River and Etta Adcock; brother, Robert "Bob" Hand and wife Ester; several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Dennis's Life will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, Adairsville with Rev. Barry Adcock and Rev. Gregg Free officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 PM until the hour of the service.
