Obituary

Harvey Lewis Herod, 90, of La Fayette, GA passed away Saturday September 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Harvey was born to Roy Shaw Herod Sr. and Mellie Dangler Herod. He was raised in a large family on a farm near Adairsville at Hall Station where he was taught the value of hard work. As early as 4 years old he began accompanying his father, who operated a sawmill, to local wooded areas. When Harvey got tired, his father placed him on "Pearl" the mule who would take him home to his mother. At 7 years of age, he started plowing the fields while operating the farm tractor. At the age of 10 he began delivering lumber from the sawmill, driving the truck three miles to Adairsville. Later, he graduated from Adairsville High School class of 1950. Harvey then served in the US Army as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict.

Harvey had many occupations over the years. Much of his time was spent in the trucking industry, where he worked as an over the road trucker, dispatcher, recruiter, operations manager, and driving instructor. He also operated gas stations, truck stops and a country store. He logged in New Mexico and South, GA. He was a salesman for a sign company, concrete plant, and Ford Trucks of Knoxville. He had a tree service and landscaping business, operated heavy equipment, and a produce delivery business. Later in life he built a sawmill; harvested timber, and milled lumber to build the log cabin where his family still resides.

Harvey loved fast cars and working outdoors. He was known for his storytelling, his generosity, and his outgoing personality. He loved people, but it was children that held the most tender place in his heart. Later in his life he began an extensive study of the Bible and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. It was his desire to be reunited with his family during the resurrection and work alongside his father again.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, sisters Gwendolyn (Harvey) Moore, Coatsie (Robert) Hodge, Martha McAdow, Judy Herod, brother Roy Shaw Herod Jr., brother-in-law Bob Morgan, niece Melliena Morgan, nephew Verlyn Moore and son-in-law Rick Dockery.

He was survived by his loving wife of 42 years Michelle Coker Herod and his sister Hilda Morgan. His children: Rodna Dockery, Harvey Lewis Herod Jr. "Rod" (Debbie) Herod, Coatsie (Jason) Holden, Loren Ross Herod, Mellie Wren (Guy) Starrett.
