Mr. Howard Briggs Garland, age 83, of 171 Old Mill Road, Rydal, and "Wiggly" his constant companion, a daschund, were involved in a farm accident, Saturday, January 15, 2011.
He was born in Cherokee County, October 8, 1927, son of the late General Briggs and Beulah Mae Hughes Garland. Mr. Garland was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and Adairsville Masonic Lodge # 168. He had retired from General Electric, Rome, in 1983, and had been a self-employed farmer, raising poultry, livestock, and even bees at one point. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Christopher Garland and 2 infant daughters, Judy and Betty Garland.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Paula Garland of Rydal, and Sharon and Ralph McCary of White; 3 sons, Glenn and Jenny Garland of Rydal, Danny and Linda Garland of Adairsville, and Robert and Joellene Garland of Rydal; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Dennis Garland of White, and Tom Garland of Adairsville; a sister, Bernise Garland of Dallas; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM from Cedar Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Hibberts officiating. Interment will follow in Faith Tabernacle Church Cemetery. The body will lie-in-state at the church, Tuesday, from 12:00 PM until the funeral hour. Grover Bishop, Tim Evans, Allen Beasley, Grayson Childers, Johnny Garland, David Briggs, Michael Garland, Lewis Cobb will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Barton Funeral Home.
