Mrs. Julia Kathryn Witherington, age 97, formerly of 101 McKenzie Street, Adairsville, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Savannah Cove Assisted Living in Maitland, Florida.

She was born in Danville, Kentucky on October 7, 1914, daughter of the late Carlton and Ethel Lane McWaters. Mrs. Witherington had attended Berea Kentucky College where she was a sister in the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, graduating in 1936 with her Bachelor's degree in English. She was then employed by the Bartow County School System where she taught English and was librarian for numerous years. Later she furthered her education at the University of Georgia, receiving her Masters and completing the 5th year program. Mrs. Witherington was a long time member of Adairsville Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Phi Beta Kappa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Witherington, her parents, and two siblings.

Survivors include three nieces, Elaine Strauss of St. Petersburg, FL, Elizabeth Shreero of Largo, FL and Kathryn Brown of Winter Garden, FL; three nephews, Ralph Tyndall of Ponte Vedra, FL, Edward McWaters, of St. Petersburg, FL, and Richard McWaters of St. Petersburg, FL.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville, with Rev. Michael Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery, Adairsville.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adairsville High School Media Center in memory of Mrs. Witherington at 519 Old Highway 41, NW, Adairsville, GA 30103
