Obituary

Maggie Ruth Hawkins, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 15, 2021, following a brief illness with cancer. Maggie is now reunited with her parents John and Eva Lou Pettyjohn, brother, John William Pettyjohn, sisters, Ethel Madden, Menafaye Pettyjohn, Elizabeth Grasham. After many years she has joined the love of her life and father of her children, Riley Monroe Hawkins II.

She was born and raised in the Subligna, Chattooga County, Georgia area. She was widowed at a young age with three children that now survive her, Juanita Thorne of Cartersville , Riley M. Hawkins III of Kingston , and Rose Villa of Euharlee. Maggie worked all her life in various jobs including Summerville Telephone Company, Regal Mills in Trion, Bundy in Cartersville, also among theses jobs she was a housekeeper, nanny, and personal caretaker. Maggie was actively employed until M arch of this years. Her passions we r e her church Kingston United Methodist, her friendships, her flowers and most of all her legacy of grandchildren, Christina (Paul) Quinlan, Joey Thorne and Erik (Amanda) Baskins; great-grandchildren, Alison Benefield, Tyler and Brandon Baskins, Joseph Thorne, and Jarah Thorne; great-great grandchildren, Oakland and De l aney. Her special grand-dog who stole her heart, Leaves Hawkins.

M aggie was a friend and angel to many. She was always ready in a few minutes to help her friends. She had a special connection with all young children, who were immediately drawn to her love. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was always ready for an adventure or trip out to eat or a gospel singing. She found a lot of joy in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in any sport especially baseball. She moved to Kingston, Georgia in the late 1980's and became immediately loved by her Kingston friends. She was know as "Mama Maggie" by her special love Miss Candi Jolley. Maggie was a beautiful person with a heart of gol d and will be deeply missed by all including her caretakers, Lisa Harr and Dawn Silvers who were honored to spend her finals days caring for her.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Benny Smith, Dr. McDonald, Dr. Mehta, and Homestead Hospice for the care the past few months.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Cloudland Presbyterian Cemetery, Menlo with Rev. Leon Smith and Payton Silvers officiating. Prior to the service the family will receive friends at Barton Funeral Home from 11:00AM – 12:00 Noon. Pallbearers will be Matthew Benefield, Ryan Silvers, Matthew Silvers, George Williams, Steve Harr, and Ben Harr.
