Ms. Mary McConnell Carreathers, 83, Adairsville, GA, passed away peacefully Monday, October 2, 2023, at PruittHealth Rome.
Mary was born in Adairsville, Georgia, May 8, 1940, to the late James Dewey McConnell, Sr and Nellie Mae Trimble McConnell. She was also preceded in death by her son, Frederick Ramon Carreathers; brothers, James Dewey McConnell Jr and William Cecil McConnell; and sister, Helen Jean McConnell.
She attended Bartow County Schools in Adairsville and graduated from Summer Hill School in 1958. After graduation she attended Fort Valley State College where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) and received her Bachelor's of Science in Home Economics. Mary was dedicated to educating the minds of children. She taught at Tallatoona Head Start, Lafayette Elementary School, and 40 years at Adairsville Elementary and High School before retiring. She loved supporting and being involved in her community. Mary served on the board for Tallatoona Bartow Head Start, the Adairsville City Council, Adairsville PTA, and enjoyed volunteering at the Adairsville Depot. Mary served numerous terms as president of the Bartow County Educators Association and was a member of the Sans Souci Club. She was a faithful member of Kaigler Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served in multiple capacities and held various positions. Mary was able to incorporate fun with seriousness and enjoyed traveling, especially cruising. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Survivors include her daughter, Michelle Carson; brother, Nelson McConnell (Thelma); grandchildren, Linares Carson, Brittany Carson, Abrea Carson and Jewell Smith (Joseph); great-grandchildren, Nia Michelle Carson, John Trey Carson, Jordan Adé Carson, Janae Brown, Jayvian Carson, Javius Carson, Jamaryah Brown, Deveion Reynolds, Jaziaha Smith, Joseph Smith, Jr; great great-granddaughter, Khaliya Carson; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 6, 2023, at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Weavers officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers include Franco Conte, Julius McConnell, Myron McConnell, Khalis McConnell, Lynn Wilkey, Cedric Barrett, and Tad Wilkey.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Barton Funeral Home.
