Norman Lee Shaw, age 95, of Adairsville, died peacefully Monday, October 23, 2017, at his home. Born November 30, 1921, he was the son of the late Thomas L. and Edna Burnette Shaw. Mr. Shaw completed his early education at the Barnsley School and graduated from Adairsville High School. He attended West Georgia College but interrupted his studies after one year to enlist in the United States Navy during World War II where he served on LCT's as a Quartermaster 2 nd Class. In the Navy, he served in Africa, in Sicily, Italy, on transport ships during the D-Day crossing at Normandy, and then in the Pacific theater during the final months of the war, ending in Japan. At the end of the war, he returned to his studies, receiving his Bachelor of Forestry degree from the University of Georgia.
A registered forester, Mr. Shaw worked as a ranger for the Georgia Forestry Commission. He taught the Veterans' Farm class for the Bartow County School System and then went to work with Bowaters' Hiawassee Land Company in Calhoun, Ga., where he built a distinguished career for more than 30 years until his retirement. After retirement, he surveyed soybean fields for the University of Georgia Extension Service. He was a part-time farmer, growing an extensive vegetable garden every year and raising Black Angus cattle.
Mr. Shaw's childhood years growing up during the Great Depression had a profound effect on him. Throughout his life, he believed in the importance of his community. He was a member of Connesena Baptist Church, Kingston, Ga., and at his death was one of the two oldest living members of the church. He served as a Deacon, as Church Clerk, and as Adult Sunday School Teacher at Connesena. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 245. Mr. Shaw also served in various leadership positions with the Adairsville Lions' Club.
