Obituary

Mr. Verner Willard Edwards, age 91, of Pine Grove Circle, Adairsville, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Floyd Medical Center.

He was born in Bartow County, February 2, 1924, son of the late Joseph Albert Edwards and Emma Matthews Edwards. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. A true American hero of the Greatest Generation, he served in the Navy during World War II aboard the ammunition supply ship, the U.S.S. Shasta. Serving in the Pacific Fleet, he witnessed the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima from the deck of his ship. Braving fierce storms and heated battle, he stood proudly and honored to serve his country, being honorably discharged. After his service, he began delivering gas, retiring from Ferrellgas. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Helen Lavasque Edwards; daughter, Janis "Jan" Edwards Rucker; son, Barry Gordon Edwards; sisters, Melba Edwards Stewart and Sybil Edwards Greene; brothers, Dayton Wallace Edwards, Billy Joe Edwards, and Adell Ray Edwards.

Survivors include his daughter, Jackie Edwards Hollis of Cartersville, son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Donna Edwards of Adairsville; daughter-in-law, Gayle Edwards of Adairsville; son-in-law and his wife, Tom and Martha Rucker of Adairsville; grandchildren, Chris Wheeler of Adairsville, Dede and Matt Long of Wellesley Hills, MA, Stephanie and Charles Graves of Rome, and Lauren and Brett Stephens of Calhoun; great-grandchildren, Canon and Catherine Wheeler, Sydney Long, and Thomas Graves; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette Edwards Dickenson and David Dickenson of Cocoa Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.

He will be laid to rest on his 92nd birthday, with funeral services being held Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM from the chapel of Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville with Rev. Larry Hibberts officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Adairsville. Pallbearers include Canon Wheeler, Matt Long, Charles Graves, Brett Stephens, Terry Huckaby, Bill Wheeler and Micky Wheeler. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville.

Following the services family and friends are encouraged to gather with the family at his sister, David and Jeanette Dickenson's, home at 124 Park Street, Adairsville, Georgia.
